DRAGERS VAN DE TIJD - La Fille I en II -

With La Fille I and La Fille II, Dutch artist duo Horden & Schimmel explore the layered nature of time and movement. Two girl figures, two postures, two eras: the first evokes the classical elegance of a nineteenth-century dancer, while the second embodies the expressive energy of a contemporary performer. As their inspiration, H & S drew from Edgar Degas’ La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans, exhibited in Paris in 1881. Like Degas’ original wax sculpture—only later cast in bronze—this figure remains seemingly unfinished. By connecting the tradition of classical sculpture with experimental materials and techniques, Horden & Schimmel investigate the boundary between form and suggestion, past and present, and matter and emptiness. DRAGERS VAN DE TIJD - La Fille III en Le Garçon -

The figures are not fully defined; they remain partly sketch, partly thought. This allows them to open up to interpretation: what you see is not only a body, but also a mood, a movement in transition.

The Fall

Parchment, copper wire – 2025 A cycle as old as time itself. The myth of Icarus is not an echo from the past, but a mirror of the present. Fathers and mothers who give their children wings—higher, farther, grander. But what if those wings are too heavy? What if something is seen in them that isn’t really there? Icarus half-listened, overestimated himself—and fell. Then, in Greek tragedy. Now, again and again. His story is often read as a warning against hubris, but also as a symbol of freedom, desire, and the courage to reach for something greater—even when it carries risks.

Hemelboog

Clashes occur between the parchment sky and the stratified earth: order and chaos, wisdom and folly, peace and war. What is real, what is imitation? What rises, what sinks? Skybow asks questions about direction, power and meaning in a world that shines but also deceives.

Sporen van Schoonheid (Traces of Beauty)

An installation that presents parts of the human body in a way reminiscent of archaeological discoveries. Each room offers its own story, while together they form a unified whole.

Duizend Keer Dwalen (A Thousand Wanderings)

Horden & Schimmel do not see wandering merely as a physical act, but as a source of inspiration—a way to learn from one’s mistakes, to move forward, and to gain insight into inner reflection and growth. So that the mind may open to new possibilities. With these works, the duo aims to draw attention to the fact that, due to a focus on efficiency, social media, and the unrest in society, little time remains for this (inner) reflection as a starting point for personal development.

Rafels van de Geest (Fragments of the Mind)

'Rafels van de Geest (Fragments of the Mind)'’ offers not only a look at the fragility and complexity of human existence, but also serves as a mirror for the present time. In a world marked by uncertainty, tumult and change, these figures represent our zeitgeist. The incompleteness of the figures reflects the fragmentation we sometimes experience in ourselves and in society.

Kunst van Verveling (The art of Boredom)

On the swings, children float between heaven and earth and feel the blowing of the wind. Free, at one with nature, connected to the universe.

They are tired of having to constantly respond to beeps from screens and all daily obligations. They long for moments of rest and imagination, where they can loaf, muse and dream, clear their heads and let their own imaginations run wild.

Verstilde Beweging (Silent Movement)

Generation Z, who can no longer imagine life without the internet, they are the digital natives. Their youth takes place at a time of social unrest caused by economic crisis, political conflicts and climate change. Yet this new generation is coming and wants to shape the world with their ideas and new ethics.

‘Verstilde Beweging (Silent Movement)’ aims to show that every young person thinks and struggles with the future, yet collectively forms a unity to achieve a liveable world.
